While we’ve all long hoped someone would just stop the ride so we could get off, we’re nevertheless still swirling around precariously on the corona-coaster. And that’s why I’m here today to touch base about the status of events amid the new variant.
Everyone’s comfort level is different; my approach remains somewhat conservative (less so now that my kids are vaxxed). I’m comfortable at most outdoor events, but now that it’s properly cold (well, L.A. cold), indoor events are a concern.
I’m actually more inclined to go to an indoor work event than a purely social holiday party right now, because brand-hosted events — guided by liability concerns — tend to be highly controlled environments. Hosts expect mask wearing and proof of vaccination, inform guests of these expectations in advance, and enforce these protocols uniformly on site. I appreciate a buttoned-up approach without surprises.
But recently I attended an event that seemed to check the boxes for my personal comfort level: According to the invite, vaccine status would be checked at the door of the venue. I’d assumed (erroneously, so that’s on me) that masks would therefore also be required. It turned out that neither was the case on site, and I was uncomfortable.
So my takeaway: Whatever your approach, make sure the invitation matches the on-site protocols so that each guest can make a properly informed decision about attendance.

With historic inflation all over the news, I intend to raise my rates in 2022. This is hard for people, and notoriously hard for women. Who plans to do the same? (And should I explore this topic more broadly in a future newsletter?)
I completed my jury service without having to report in person, so that’s a wrap! ✅ (Don’t get me started, though, on my unending laundry room drama.)
