Keep events in Los Angeles!
Support the wildfire recovery effort with your continuing business.
For my family, today marks a certain return to normalcy: It’s the first day my kids were able to return to their school following two weeks of fire-related closure (which immediately followed winter break — so they’d effectively been out since mid-December).
On Friday, my parents were also able to return to their home, which still stands entirely thanks to a massive coordinated firefighting effort. When my parents got back in, they found a Cal Fire team still stationed in their backyard (during a 72-hour-on shift!), and they stayed clear through the weekend on alert for embers and wind danger. How to thank these guys enough? They are true heroes. My 82-year-old mom made them a hot meal, and I think very much enjoyed taking photos with them, too.
Yesterday, in celebration of MLK Jr. Day, my friends and I arranged to go for a hike. I drove 30 miles to get there, as all of our go-to hiking trails to the west, east, and north are all burned; the geographic scale of it is staggering. But friends and nature are both healing.
So that’s where we are here. We acknowledge we are the lucky ones and continue to grieve and organize for our fellow Angelenos wherever we can. To that end, this PSA:
Please keep events, meetings, productions, etc. in Los Angeles. Cancelling them is not a service to a wounded city, but a further punishment to a population already devastated by tragedy. Your continued business is essential to the recovery — to the survival of working servers, electricians, rigging crews, valets, chefs, lighting designers (shout out to my husband’s business, Kinetic Lighting)… and on and on.
So be sensitive in your language, sure. Add a relief fundraising component — even better. But most of all know that bringing event event business to LA is actually a deeply meaningful act of service right now.
On with the show.

Open press opportunities
For The Points Guy, I’m working on a series of stories that will require me to fact-check hotel information — specifically the starting price point and starting number of points required for booking. First up, I am looking for contacts working with the following Cancun properties to help me validate this info:

You already know my own press opportunities are in this very Substack! I’m also a media member of Press Hook, where publicists can create and manage press kits and brand profiles on behalf of clients and use the AI-driven platform to connect with journalists in a streamlined way. If you’re not using Press Hook yet, you should definitely give it a try: It’s designed as a platform to connect journalists looking for story sources with brands who want to showcase their products and experts, and it’s all really built on trust and meaningful connections (it’s not spammy). It also offers a suite of helpful workflow tools. Journalists can search by product and category, and participating brands get exposure and affiliate opportunities — so it’s designed as a win-win for everyone (in the same vein as this Substack, I like to think). Give it a try — and let me know what you think.
