Gather round, friends, and I will tell you the tale of how yesterday went off the rails.
Multitasking as always, I went outside in my slippers to take a work phone call while I moved my car for street sweeping. On the way back inside my house, I failed to clear the step to my stoop, and I fell right down on my face, absorbing the force of the Spanish tile with my mouth and chin.
After I got over the trauma and demoralization of the incident (JK, I’m obviously still not over it), I assessed my wounds and went to urgent care. It being Beverly Hills (where conversation often drifts to plastic surgery), there was some talk about whether I would need a referral to plastic surgery for dissolvable stitches. But in the end, they just cleaned out the injury, bandaged it, and sent me home with the shredded vestiges of my dignity.
All of that is to say, if you see me on Thursday’s Valentine’s Day gift guide Zoom session, and I am either wearing an inch of pancake makeup and/or bandages and/or a mask — that’s why. Still, I am looking forward to seeing you all there!
BTW, this is the last call for signups; we currently have 16 spaces left. If you’ve already registered, you’re in! Look out for the Zoom link direct to your inbox tomorrow.
Where Should I Go in January?
I’m looking for a family-friendly travel destination during the first week of January, while my kids are still out of school. Is there something new/updated/interesting I should see? Prefer international and warm with easy nonstop or one-stop from LAX if possible, but flexible. I will (presumably) not be on an official assignment. Open to ideas!
Tools of the trade
Is anyone using Press Hook yet? If you haven’t heard of it, it’s designed as a platform to connect journalists looking for story sources with brands who want to showcase their products and experts. It also offers a suite of helpful workflow tools. Journalists can search by product and category, and participating brands get exposure and affiliate opportunities — so it’s designed as a win-win for everyone (in the same vein as this Substack). Give it a try — right now there’s a 14-day free trial available — and let me know what you think.
Jennifer Goforth Gregory launched a course that I consider essential continuing ed right now: “Improve Your Productivity With AI Tools.” The course is geared toward not only understanding the fundamentals of AI for business writing but also knowing how to use it to actually make your job easier. You also get access to a live monthly Q&A so I consider this a great bargain at $125 (and it’s a write-off, to boot). I learned so much from it. It’s really not daunting — just a straightforward tool, broken up into easily digestible short sessions, with learnings you can implement right away. Sign up for the course here.
Freshbooks is the bookkeeping tool I use exclusively for my invoicing, expenses, and reporting. It’s the best, IMHO, so I evangelize. Get FreshBooks here.
Are you a publicist who needs help understanding the affiliate game? This course, Affiliate Marketing for Publicists, can help.
I’m obsessed with the game-changing platform Otter.ai. I use it to both record interviews and also to transcribe them in real time. You can also use it to record/transcribe any type of meeting — so anyone who missed it can easily access the Cliff’s Notes version. There’s a pro plan for agencies/companies with a ton of neat features. Check out Otter.ai here.
My TV reporter and PR agency owner friend Christina Nicholson (who hosted me on her podcast ) hosts a 3-day program for pitching media. Once a seasonal event, she’s now made it available on-demand. You get the masterclass, a personal branding workbook, and a fill-in-the-blanks pitch template — all for $37. It’s a steal, so don’t let it pass you by.
Open press opportunities
For the beautiful travel industry trade magazine The Compass (yes, a proper magazine!), I’m working on a feature story about wellness travel. This article will not only cover the latest wellness travel trends and the suppliers supporting them, but dive into how travel advisors can find, attract, and book more clients seeking wellness-focused experiences. I’m looking for expert travel advisors and suppliers in the wellness travel space who can offer tips on topics like:
How advisors can recognize a wellness travel supplier (What are the features that make a travel brand attractive to wellness-oriented clients? And on the flip side, what are the red flags to be aware of that might indicate the supplier is not legitimate in its wellness travel approach?)
Crafting wellness travel itineraries
How to market their expertise in wellness travel to attract the right clientele
How to educate clients on the importance of wellness travel
For Elle Decor, I’m working on a roundup of the best hotels in Hawaii for families. Along with any pitches, please send along a people-free photo along with written acknowledgment that “we, with other Hearst brands and our licensees, may have your irrevocable permission to use it.”
