With due credit again to fellow writers Bryce Gruber and Aly Walansky for spawning the idea for this newsletter, I now count it among my successful networking strategies as a full-time remote freelancer. As I’ve discussed many times before, community is so important — especially in a diffuse, remote, and virtual professional landscape — and this helps.
This is what the Clubhouse Mastering Media club was for me earlier in the pandemic when it was a daily lunchtime hangout sesh with my chosen work family, an essential chance to share, vent, and gain perspective.
When the world opened up, we gathered there with less frequency. Ahem, that is to say, I’m never on there anymore. But my fondness for the platform lives on — thanks to long lead time for print!
Months ago I gave my feedback for a story in the magazine for the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), the trade association of which I’m a member. (Count that among my successful business-building strategies, too.) The issue focuses on developing your expert self.
And the story is about networking for writers in an online age — though it applies tidily to any profession across lifestyle media.
It’s not online yet, so here’s a bit of what I said in print (remember print?):
What networking strategies work for you in this digital age?
Open Press Opportunities
This week I started contributing to Best Life in a more regular capacity. I’ll be writing daily stories hung on newsy pegs, so feel free to pitch me your relationship, travel, and health experts/angles.
For Women’s Day, I’m rounding up the best travel gifts. (Please include that phrase in the subject line for any pitches. And thank you for the many pitches I’ve already received on this one!)
For Hotels Above Par, I’m rounding up the best ski resorts in the world (unique and boutique over mega-resorts) and I’m open to pitches.
For Allrecipes, I’m always open to hearing about home cooks to profile as subjects for my bimonthly budget grocery column (this familiar face serves as an example of what it looks like).
