Last week, I shared that I had plunked down my $17 for AI headshots and was waiting for the robots to generate my āphoto shoot.ā Today I am reporting back with the results of that experiment. And let me just say: It was worth every penny and more for the amusement value.
Those of you who know me personally or follow me on social media may know that I am a white Jewish woman with curly hair. With no input beyond 16 of my own photographs, AI decided I am a Black woman. When it generated a gallery of 100 photos, it depicted me as a Black woman in greater than 90 of them.
First, my professional, human-generated headshot for reference:
Now, a sample of the AI photos:
While I am supremely flattered that robots turned me into Serena Williams in some of these photos, alas I cannot use most of them for the obvious reason that they do not accurately represent me.
The good news is there is one (or so) that I should be able to use with some strategic un-contouring of the decolletage and toning down of the lipstick. For reference purposes, hereās the original version of that shot as the AI created it:
After I shared these with my friends and family, they couldnāt wait to see what AI would make of them. So one by one they were tempted to pull the trigger as well. My sister, who submitted a photo showing her arm āĀ despite clear instructions not to āĀ ended up with many AI-generated photos in which she has three arms. (I would share them here, but I am not authorized to do so, and she would kill me.)
Other friends found it aged them ā a lot. And made their eyes point in different directions. And gave them extra teeth or digits. But almost everyone seemed to get at least one viable headshot that made their $17 worth it.
Anyway, all of the cackling laughter I got from seeking these imaginary appendages and mouths full of extra teeth was simply priceless. (The rest is a write-off.)

RSVP for the press trips AMA
The big press trips Zoom session, which Iām hosting along with my frequent-traveler/lifestyle writer colleagues Aly Walansky and Jill Schildhouse, is set for April 12 at 11 am PT/2 pm ET. You wonāt want to miss this presentation + Q&A session ā itās going to be piping-hot tea. In order to RSVP for this event, you must be a paid subscriber to all three of our Substacks. Looking forward to it!
Tools of the trade
Is anyone using Press Hook yet? If you havenāt heard of it, itās designed as a platform to connect journalists looking for story sources with brands who want to showcase their products and experts. It also offers a suite of helpful workflow tools. Journalists can search by product and category, and participating brands get exposure and affiliate opportunities ā so itās designed as a win-win for everyone (in the same vein as this Substack). Give it a try ā right now thereās a 14-day free trial available āĀ and let me know what you think.
Freshbooks is the bookkeeping tool I use exclusively for my invoicing, expenses, and reporting. Itās the best, IMHO, so I evangelize. Get FreshBooks here.
Are you a publicist who needs help understanding the affiliate game? This course, Affiliate Marketing for Publicists, can help.
Iām obsessed with the game-changing platform Otter.ai. I use it to both record interviews and also to transcribe them in real time. You can also use it to record/transcribe any type of meeting ā so anyone who missed it can easily access the Cliffās Notes version. Thereās a pro plan for agencies/companies with a ton of neat features. Check out Otter.ai here.
My TV reporter and PR agency owner friend Christina Nicholson (who hosted me on her podcast ) hosts a 3-day program for pitching media. Once a seasonal event, sheās now made it available on-demand. You get the masterclass, a personal branding workbook, and a fill-in-the-blanks pitch template āĀ all for $37. Itās a steal, so donāt let it pass you by.
Open press opportunities
For a feature story in the travel trade magazine The Compass, I am still working on a story about sustainable travel and what role agents should play. Iām seeking travel agents keyed into this topic with smart feedback to share: What role do agents play in educating their clients about sustainable travel? Have you built a business around doing this? Do you redirect clients toward other more sustainable options for their travel plans?
