I travel frequently with and without my husband and kids throughout the year, both for work and leisure — and usually for a hybrid of both. But we typically shoot for one larger-scale summer vacation each July with the whole family. Last year, it was Rome, the Amalfi Coast, and the South of France. (Life happened, mistakes were made, but it was still unforgettable and special.)
This year, we’ve just booked our annual summer trip to a place I’ve never been: Japan! We’ll fly into Tokyo and split our time between Tokyo and the region around Kyoto/Osaka. I’m excited to put together an itinerary and welcome all suggestions and tips. I’ve got a 15-day streak going on Duolingo, so just saying I’ll probably be conversational by July. (Ahem.)
On to the news of the day:
First — and this is a fun one — we have some spaces left in next week’s Zoom session with Peter Shankman of HARO. So I’m going to open it up to all subscribers at any level until it’s full. RSVP HERE NOW!
Second, don’t forget to sign up for Thursday’s Zoom co-hosted with Aly Walansky: Everything you need to know about pitching dads and grads gift guides for 2024! (We will be sending out a recording for anyone who can’t make it live.)
We also have several new job postings listed below, so if you’re in the market, remember to check out that section.
And last — for anyone keeping score at home — yesterday I got yet another iteration of the world’s worst follow-up email. That makes seven. I can’t. (Here’s the story: This is the worst kind of follow-up email you can send).
Tools of the trade
Freshbooks is the bookkeeping tool I use exclusively for my invoicing, expenses, and reporting. It’s the best, IMHO, so I evangelize. Get FreshBooks here.
Are you a publicist who needs help understanding the affiliate game? This course, Affiliate Marketing for Publicists, can help.
I use Otter.ai to record interviews and Zoom meetings and also to transcribe them in real time. It’s a game changer. There’s a pro plan for agencies/companies with a ton of neat features. Check out Otter.ai here.
You already know my own press opportunities are in this very Substack! I’m also an affiliate partner for Press Hook, where publicists can create and manage press kits and brand profiles on behalf of clients and use the AI-driven platform to connect with journalists in a streamlined way. You can give it a try with a 14-day free trial — and if you use it, let me know what you think.
I’m also a partner for Press Loft, officially launching in the coming weeks in the US. The platform connects journalists with brands and PR agencies — primarily, but not exclusively, in the interior, home decor, and gifting categories. (It’s already among the top resources in the UK.) It offers some cool features like image-enhancing tools that use AI to turn low-res images into high-res ones. And you can upload product images and information to specific image libraries that journalists can access 24/7. Check it out with a free trial.

Have the best time in Japan, Alice! Can't wait to see photos!
Aw! I just went to Tokyo and Osaka for the first time in November! What a trip! I know it gets a lot of hype for being touristy, but TeamLabs is so much fun and worth it for the whole family. We also got a kick out of the Art Aquarium Museum in Ginza. It's a quirky goldfish museum in a shopping mall but it was so cool and would be a great experience for kids. I'm an adult and I loved it. If you're taking the Shinkansen train to Kyoto/Osaka and you have oversized or large luggage, it's worth it to splurge on the car upgrade to "first class" so they can store your luggage. Otherwise, I am not sure what we would have done. One of the craziest things we discovered is there are NO public trash cans! So, if you pick up drinks or snacks along your walks, it's not easy to dispose of them when you are done. So, bring a larger crossbody bag so you can stow your trash/cups until you get back to your hotel or visit a restaurant.
