Here to help you make sense of layoffs and AI in media
Sign up for the event. Plus, AMA recording link, new jobs, opps, bad clients, and more.
There’s a lot to get through today, so allow me to jump right in:
The sky is not falling but there is certainly a lot of urgent concern in our world these days — between the recent wave of media layoffs and the simultaneous rise of AI/chatGPT for content creation.
If you’re nervous, confused, or simply want to forge/deepen connections at this transitional time for the industry, please join me along with my colleagues Jill Schildhouse and Aly Walansky for a special quick-turn ask-us-anything session in response to these hot topics.
The three of us will be available to answer all your questions on these topics — or any others — offering each of our unique perspectives from our combined 60-plus years (!!!) in the industry as it has evolved and changed*. (*Anyone remember print?)
This Zoom will be open to those who are paid subscribers to any one of our Substacks and is capped at 100 attendees. With limited spots available, we will be giving preference to people who subscribe to all three (free is fine!) but are paid subscribers to any one of the three of us.
Please RSVP to the link all the way at the bottom of today’s newsletter and share any questions you have in advance to ensure we’re using our time wisely. We’ll have a lot to cover. Just a note that we will not be recording this session.
Industry Hot Topics AMA With Jill and Aly
Date: Monday, February 6th
Time: 10 am PST/1 pm EST
Thanks also to everyone who joined this week’s subscriber AMA! It was a great session. ICYMI, please find the link to the full recording at the very bottom of this email beneath the paywall. (Upgrade your subscription to see it.)

Bad Clients
Sharing for your amusement this new data from FreshBooks (which is the bookkeeping software I use for my business, incidentally).
The “Bad Clients” Report by FreshBooks found that the top red flags that someone is going to be a nightmare client are “making unreasonable demands” (41%), “meanness” (35%) and “not paying on time” (1 in 4 respondents).
I thought it would be fun to do a poll of our own for a sense of how things work in the media industry specifically.

Tools of the trade
Whoa, did you know you can turn your laptop into a mega-professional three-screen setup from literally anywhere? Xebec’s Tri-Screen 2 adds two more screens to any laptop with instant set up/no installation. The whole thing is only two pounds — super thin and can even stay on your laptop when you aren’t using it. Seems like a game changer for remote work/WFH. I’m about to set it up with my MacBook Air and will report back asap.
Freshbooks is the bookkeeping tool I use exclusively for my invoicing, expenses, and reporting. It’s the best, IMHO, so I evangelize. Get FreshBooks here.
Are you a publicist who needs help understanding the affiliate game? This course, Affiliate Marketing for Publicists, can help.
I’m obsessed with the game-changing platform Otter.ai. I use it to both record interviews and also to transcribe them in real time. You can also use it to record/transcribe any type of meeting — so anyone who missed it can easily access the Cliff’s Notes version. There’s a pro plan for agencies/companies with a ton of neat features. Check out Otter.ai here.
My TV reporter and PR agency owner friend Christina Nicholson (who hosted me on her podcast ) hosts a 3-day program for pitching media. Once a seasonal event, she’s now made it available on-demand. You get the masterclass, a personal branding workbook, and a fill-in-the-blanks pitch template — all for $37. It’s a steal, so don’t let it pass you by.
Open press opportunities
For Travel + Leisure, I’m rounding up essentials for traveling with kids. Open to pitches in all relevant categories. Excitingly, this story is also slated to appear in a digital issue.
