Oops + freelance tips (for real this time) + new pitches, please!
Yesterday I promised “freelance tips” in my Substack subject line… and then forgot to actually include that section.
I felt better about that goof today after I received not one but two corrections on a newsletter I follow from a well-respected writer. The second followup, her third email of the hour, just used a one-word subject line — an expletive (the bad one). Mistakes happen to the best of us!
Anyway, without further ado, here are those freelance tips I promised. Along with writers
and Brad Japhe, I contributed thoughts for a Muck Rack story about tips for going freelance. And although the story is primarily targeted at freelance journalists, I think there’s a lot here that applies to all sorts of freelancers, including would-be freelance publicity professionals. In short, I’m very much pro-freelance:Experienced freelancer Alice Dubin recalls years back when she was laid off from a traditional journalism job. “That layoff was so painful—it shook my whole identity and sense of worth to the core. I feared it was the end of my career,” she says. Alice had already dabbled in freelancing on the side of her job and decided to make a go of it full time.
“I started freelancing as a stopgap measure while I looked for new employment and—spoiler: I figured out freelancing is the place to be!” she says. “It’s generally better compensated, more interesting, more flexible, more varied, and best of all—it’s my own name on the door.”
Of all my tips in the story, this one is probably the most broadly applicable:
With more than 20 years in this industry, I’ve seen it all. I started out with magazine-world aspirations, but we all know how that worked out when the World Wide Web turned out to be a real thing. You just have to go with the flow: Everything changes, often very quickly, and you must adapt or it’s over for you.
